<p><em><strong>Abstract</strong></em></p> <p>Students majoring in medicine are among the students who have a high level of stress. Coping mechanisms can help improve students' stress levels and academic performance1. Regional origin and personality tendencies have a relationship with the use of coping mechanisms 2. In this study, we will see the relationship between regional origin and coping mechanisms on the academic achievement of first-year students, who are new students and based on literature have the highest level of stress compared to more senior students3. This study used an observational analytical study with a cross-sectional research design. The research sample was 70 students of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, University of Bengkulu in the first year in May 2020. Sampling using consecutive sampling techniques. The data taken were characteristic data, questionnaire data on coping mechanisms and GPA data for semester 1 of the research subject. The data were analyzed using univariate, bivariate and multivariate assays. Logistic regression multivariate tests are used to analyze hypotheses. The results of the characteristic questionnaire found that most of the respondents came from the island of Sumatra (82.9%) and had academic achievements that were included in the award category (85.7%). The origin of the region has no relationship with the coping mechanism and the achievement of first-year students. Even so, the coping mechanism has a relationship to student academic achievement (p = 0.015). The results of the multivariate test found that the coping mechanism had a partial influence on academic achievement (p = 0.012). Regional origins do not have a partial influence on academic achievement, while the coping mechanism has a partial influence on the academic achievement of first-year students of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, University of Bengkulu.</p>Riry AmbarsarieRamah WulandariAhmad Azmi NasutionIke SulistyowatiDiah Ayu Aguspa Dita
